Ballad of the Lazy Blogger

I used to be a blogger
but it’s grinding to a halt
There’s lots of things to blame for it
It’s really not my fault.

Replying to Obama posts
has brought me to exhaustion
I can’t get round to writing blogs
with all the time it’s costing.

I used to write insightful stuff
on life and on religion
but now I seem to spend more time
sweeping dog hair out the kitchen.

The stuff of life has caught me up
like a fly in spider’s webbing
And like the fly that’s hanging there
my strength is slowly ebbing.

At least for now I’ve managed one-
Another post’s been captured
Perhaps I’ll write another blog
sometime before I’m raptured.

5 Cool Things…

…about the last 24 hours.

1) Half a dozen of my students stayed behind after class this morning to ask questions about some DEEEEEP theology. They are 10 – 11 years old. I did not prompt them.

2) I have just been teaching my class how to play ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol on the guitar. They now think I’m Mr Schneebly.

3) My wife & I tidied the whole house last night. It is now gleaming. Rah rah!!

4) Outside right now, I smelt that after-the-rain smell you only get after a couple of dry weeks and a sudden downpour.

5) I just ordered a kit from a blade maker in England who hand-forges his own blades to build my own fishing knife & sheath. I could just have bought a knife, but that’s not very Dudely, is it? Any dudes reading this will totally get me. Prepare yourselves for self-indulgent fishing-knife related posts…

Movie Hell

It occurred to me last night that if it turned out that my faith was misguided and I actually turned up in hell when I died, the first thing they would do would be take me to a little room and force me to watch Steve Martin movies on a constant loop.

More Obama Antichrist Ranting: This is Getting RIDICULOUS.

Obama as viewed through Eschato-goggles

People, people…. I am getting seriously worried about some of you. Since my tongue-in-cheek “Is Barack Obama the Antichrist” post and my brazenly facetious numerology post, traffic to Mackle has been getting busier, up until a crazy explosion with the beginning of the primaries when my visits increased thirty-fold. As a Scot, I entered this whole field with the curious interest of an outside observer. What I’ve actually observed has been nothing short of terrifying.

The whole end-times/prophetic/eschatological guesswork obsession which is rife on Christian TV has obviously infiltrated the popular consciousness in a big way.

I include here a selection of my favourite soundbites from the comments on my assorted Obama blogs, complete with typos…

I strive to be ever so careful when discussing such issues and placing names. Still, when I see this guy, something sits “wierd” with me. (It could be the eccentric name) “

I have just spent the last 30 minutes reading posts about Barack being the antichrist… I thought the idea must be crazy, but my curiousity got the best of me and I did a quick Google search.”

“I never saw his face but only GEARD his words, and his voice and his tone and REALIZED that WTF this man is the antichrist. I never even knew Obama or who he was prior to that “

barack obama is a wierdo!! he resembles the anti christ! is there any way we can determine if he is or not?”

“It just so happens that Obama is the anti-christ. I believe so and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with any logic I have employed or any racist attitudes that I may have. Fact is, this man is the antichrist. It was weird how it was revealed to me …”

“…and here it is a year before elections and people already are set on him for president. Has that ever happen to a president before? NO…

“isn’t it said that the antichrist will die and then come back? well, isn’t his middle name hussein???”

“I don’t trust him one bit. I don’t for a second buy that he’s now “Christian.””

“Tonight the answer was right there in front of me. When he took the stage to give his Iowa Caucus Victory Speech he seemed cold and distant. “

“I had never heard of him before these elections, he has never really accomplished anything that I have been informed of, and to be perfectly honest, he has empty eyes, very empty eyes. I refuse to believe this man is a christian, I am a christian, that man is not.”

Oh, it goes on and on…

Look, folks. You may not like him. You may have racist attitudes you struggle with. You may have listened to too many end-times date-callers and watched too much TBN. You may think he’s creepy. You may think his policies are bad. You may think his haircut is bad. He may just give you the heebie-jeebies (as my wife feels!) but you can’t go around saying he’s not a christian and even more bizarrely claiming that he’s the Antichrist based on a combination of your Heebie-Jeebie feeling, your TBN habit and his Surname.

As a Christian, can I plead with the Christians on here to get on with loving God, living as salt and light, spreading the gospel and loving each other instead of getting hung up in eschatological craziness. Nobody knows who the Antichrist is – it hasn’t been revealed yet. In fact, who said it was a single person at all?? It could be a whole system, just as Babylon is a personified system. The point is that we have the victory in Christ, these things MUST happen (whoever they will involve and whenever they will occur) and calling dates, times, names and such just makes you look like idiots if you’re wrong, just as everyone who claimed to know who it was over the last 2000 years look like idiots now that it is apparent that they were talking nonsense.

Enough with the wild claims, people, and concentrate on living the life God called you to.

To quote Skank Bangerton (!!!!), the most profane commenter on my blog so far, and who added his nugget while I was composing this post…

Barack Obama may be the Antichrist. I doubt it.”

Baptism – Infants or Believers?

I’ve been thinking about baptism for the last little while. There’s no doubt that baptism is an important part of Christian life; that much cannot be debated. Unfortunately, just about every other thing about it IS. I grew up in a church where infants are baptised and never really questioned it. It was just what we did. It was all about raising children in the church family, I thought. As I got older and I started reading my Bible, I noticed fairly rapidly that (to quote Mark Driscoll) “There are as many infant baptisms in the Bible as there are unicorns”.

Conveniently, as I was thinking about this, I heard a number of sermons clarifying the church’s position on baptism. It was all about baptism being a continuation of the Abrahamic covenant, and of the sign of circumcision. I’ve heard this argument for infant baptism dozens of times now, but frankly, I just don’t see how it plays out. As far as I was aware, the Abrahamic covenant and the New covenant are not the same thing. The new has echoes of the old but is a covenant of faith and rebirth, not of lineage and physical grafting into the family of God by the symbol of circumcision. In other words, the covenant children of the Abrahamic covenant are his physical children, but the new covenant are Christ’s covenant children by faith.

Aside from all that, I simply don’t see any children being baptised anywhere in scripture. Paul talks about baptising the household of Stephanas (1 Cor. 1 v16, but later in the same letter states that the household of Stephanas were all converts and were engaged in Christian service (1 Cor 16 v 15), which is pretty difficult for a baby to achieve. Likewise, the Phillipian jailer. His family all believed and were baptised. Time and again we see “repent and be baptised” or “believe and be baptised” appearing in scripture, showing that one is a natural follow-on to the other.

I’m sorry, but I simply can’t see where the paedobaptists find their warrant to baptise infants, and that’s me speaking as someone who was indeed baptised as an infant. Does that mean I should be baptised again? I don’t think so, as regardless of the fact that I wasn’t aware of it, I have actually been through the physical process of baptism, as well as having undergone the essential heart-transformation that gives baptism its true meaning, even if they happened (as I would see it) in the wrong order.

I’m not stirring debate here, but I’d love to know where people stand on the issue and what their views are. If you think I’m wrong, fire at will! I’d love to hear your perspectives!

By the way, there ARE unicorns in the Bible, or at least there are if you’re reading the King James Version, but I still love Mark Driscoll’s quote.
